GUEST POST:
A
Writer’s Weekly Focus
By MK McClintock
I wake up each morning between 5:00 AM and
6:00 AM. My typical summer workday begins with walking the dogs, followed by a
workout, cleaning the house, watering the gardens, feeding the dogs, getting
ready for the day, and eating breakfast. This generally all takes place before
8:00 or 9:00 AM. Then the workday begins with answering emails for both my
regular businesses and writing. I check through my social media networks and
respond to any messages or posts. I go back and forth during the day between
the crazy world of Human Resources and the busy world of writing. When 4:00 PM
hits, I try to focus my time on writing for a few hours so that I can enjoy my
evening. Busy, but it sounds like I have it all worked out doesn’t it? Well, I
don’t.
As a writer who is also a business-owner, I
can set all the schedules I want, but life is unpredictable and it can get in
the way of a carefully plotted-out day. Focusing on just one thing at a time is
nearly impossible, but not completely. Ask yourself “If
I can only finish one task this week, what will that be?” Chances are you’re going to have
more than one task that needs to be completed, so save the smaller tasks for a
daily focus. For a weekly focus, set a goal for yourself by taking one of your
larger tasks and making that a weekly goal—something to be accomplished no
matter what.
Can you do it alone? Probably not. If you have a
family or a job, then you’ll need the encouragement and support of those around
you. Need motivation? Let your family and friends in on your weekly focus and
ask for their understanding while you work to accomplish that goal.
At the time I’m writing this, my weekly focus is
completing the final edits on my latest book, Gallagher’s Hope. The following
week, my focus will be to complete all of the guest posts and interviews for my
book tours. But wait, I have more than one task that has to be completed! That
happens to me every week, so I have learned to prioritize. If I have two tasks
I need to focus on in a given week, then I prioritize one task to be completed
mid-week and the other to be completed by the weekend. Do smaller things ever
fall between the cracks? Certainly. Do I have so many things I’d like to
accomplish that some are delayed until I can really focus on what needs to be
done? It happens.
Also ask yourself, “What do you want to achieve in the following week to help you achieve
your long-term goals?” If you have a long-term focus that requires a lot of
steps along the way, make sure you take one of your weeks and focus on one of
those steps.
A writer’s time-management can be tricky. If
you’re lucky enough that all you have to do is write, and nothing else
interferes with your day then keep on writing. Writing may be rewarding and enjoyable,
but it’s hard work. If you aren’t meeting your writing goals, then step back
and take a realistic look at your time. Are you really focused on writing or
are too many things interrupting? Are you focused on achieving your goals or
are you only concerned about meeting a deadline? I learned the hard way that
rushing to meet a deadline is not worth losing my focus.
What will you focus on this week? Will that
focus help you to achieve your long-term writing and personal goals? Is what
you want to accomplish realistic for a weekly focus? How do you manage your
time to make that weekly focus a priority?

Gallagher’s Hope
Excerpts:
(Note:
sections and paragraphs in the excerpts are not necessarily in any particular
order. These are brief so as not to give too much away.)
Brief Teaser Excerpt
One:
There was nothing left of the life she
had known.
Her slender arm
wrapped around the little boy’s shoulder and pulled him closer to his side. She
could feel his slight trembling and wished more than anything that she could
take his sadness. They were alone in the world. They had each other
and she prayed that would be enough for them both.
They stood and
listened as the priest gave the final blessing and the caskets were lowered
into the ground. It wasn’t something anyone should witness, but she needed the
closure. She needed to know that it was over. ‘A very sad affair’ everyone
called it for it wasn’t every day that a man murdered his wife and then shot
himself. It wasn’t healthy to think on the possible reasons why, but she
couldn’t seem to help herself. She had truly believed that they had been a happy
family. One of the wealthiest in New Orleans and one of the most respected and
sought out for social gatherings. The truth however, was revealed with her
father’s death. No one would speak of it to them of course, but the lawyer had
made it quite clear.
They were
penniless.
Brief Teaser Excerpt
Two:
“You promised
Gabriel, you promised!”
Gabriel wasn’t a
light sleeper. In fact it often took a great deal to wake him from a pleasant
slumber and last night had been one heck of a night’s sleep. He enjoyed waking
with Isabelle in the room. What he didn’t enjoy was being yelled at and falsely
accused before he’d even had his first cup of coffee. Her words though, did
enough to bring him about.
“Good grief, Isabelle
it’s too early for yelling and I didn’t break my promise.” Gabriel moved around
the side of the bed until he located his boots and slipped them on. His happy
memories of holding her in his arms the night before were quickly replaced by
anger and irritation.
“What do you call
waking up next to me then Gabriel?”
“If
you’ll take a good look at yourself, and me for that matter, you’ll see we’re
both fully dressed. More’s the pity.”
